CBBC Newsround reporter visits St Filumena’s Catholic Primary School to deliver News Reporting Skills workshop to students

Students at St Filumena’s Catholic Primary School had a prestigious visitor this week, Martin Dougan of CBBC’s Newsround team.

Martin was accompanied by his colleagues who also work on the Newsround team and who ran an hour long interactive training session on news and reporting skills for the children.

BBC Young Reporter and CBBC ran the workshop as part of their ‘Stepping Out’ programme with speakers talking to the pupils about what makes a great story and how to tell it, news literacy and talking more generally about media and broadcasting.

The children got to write their own their own news stories, and to take part in a question and answer session with Martin at the end.

“This was a great opportunity for our children – they really enjoyed meeting Martin and his colleagues and writing their own news stories.  It has ignited a true passion for literacy,” commented Mrs Claire Tomlinson, Headteacher at St Filumena’s.
